Purpose and Program Overview
The Ignite Program NT is a Northern Territory Government initiative designed to help founders and early-stage businesses develop innovative ideas into commercially viable products, services and technologies. The program combines pre-seed funding with expert advice, mentoring and founder development to help applicants progress from an initial concept towards commercialisation and investment readiness.
The program has two support streams. Stream A – Planning provides a $2,000 voucher and advisory and mentoring support to help an applicant develop an Innovation Project Plan. Stream B – Creating provides up to $15,000 to develop a minimum viable product (MVP), together with pitch training and other support intended to prepare founders for future investment opportunities. The NT Government has described the overall program as providing support of up to $17,000 across the two streams.
Ignite is intended to strengthen the Northern Territory’s innovation ecosystem by increasing the development and commercialisation of innovative ideas and building a pipeline of early-stage businesses capable of attracting investment and generating economic activity in the Territory. It is the successor to the former Business Innovation Program, with a redesigned structure intended to make support accessible at different stages of an innovation journey.

Priority Sectors
The current public program information does not identify a restricted list of priority industry sectors. Ignite is therefore broadly applicable to Territory founders and early-stage businesses developing innovative products, services, technologies or business concepts. The program’s emphasis is on the innovation and commercialisation potential of the proposal, rather than membership of a particular industry.
Funding Scope
Ignite has two distinct streams:
Stream A – Planning
- Funding: $2,000 voucher.
- Purpose: For an innovative idea for a new business, early-stage product or service.
- Support: Advisory and mentoring services to develop an Innovation Project Plan.
- Additional support: Eligible participants may be invited to pitch and investor training and related support programs.
- Application timing: Open year-round.
Stream B – Creating
- Funding: Up to $15,000.
- Purpose: Development of an innovation that already has an Innovation Project Plan and is progressing towards commercialisation.
- Primary outcome: Development of a minimum viable product.
- Additional support: Pitch training and investor training/support opportunities.
- Application timing: Four funding rounds are scheduled during the 2026–27 period.
The current public program information does not specify a single program-wide project duration. Applicants should refer to the current Ignite Program Guidelines and the relevant GrantsNT application requirements for project commencement, completion, milestones and reporting conditions.
Eligibility Criteria
An applicant must generally:
- Be a legal entity.
- Hold a valid Australian Business Number (ABN).
- Qualify as a Territory Enterprise under the relevant NT Government requirements.
- Be a Northern Territory founder or early-stage business developing an innovative concept.
- Not fall within an excluded applicant category under the program guidelines.
For Stream B, the applicant should have an Innovation Project Plan and be seeking to progress the identified innovation towards commercialisation. The proposed development should be consistent with the stage of innovation supported by the relevant stream.
The published program information does not specify a minimum or maximum turnover threshold, GST registration threshold, insurance requirement or employee-count requirement. Applicants should therefore confirm these matters against the current program guidelines before lodging an application.
Eligible Activities and Expenses
The program is focused on activities that help an innovative concept progress towards commercialisation. Depending on the relevant stream and approved project, support can include:
- Developing and refining an innovative product or service.
- Developing a minimum viable product.
- Technical or product development.
- Testing and validating an innovation.
- Investigating commercial viability and market requirements.
- Obtaining specialist advice relevant to the innovation.
- Developing an Innovation Project Plan.
- Mentoring and advisory services.
- Pitch preparation and investor-readiness activities.
- Activities required to progress an innovation towards commercialisation.
Applicants should not assume that ordinary operating expenses or expenditure unrelated to the approved innovation are eligible. The Ignite Program Guidelines and the approved funding arrangement should be used to determine whether a particular cost can be claimed.
Assessment Process
Ignite is a competitive funding program for Stream B, rather than an automatic entitlement for every eligible applicant. The assessment is intended to identify innovations with commercial potential and projects that can contribute to the Territory’s innovation and economic objectives.
Applicants should demonstrate:
- A clearly defined innovative product, service, technology or business concept.
- A credible pathway from the current development stage towards commercialisation.
- A well-developed Innovation Project Plan where required.
- A clear and reasonable use of grant funding.
- The capability and resources required to undertake the proposed activities.
- Potential commercial and economic benefits for the Northern Territory.
- Potential to become investment-ready and attract future investment.
The former Business Innovation Program assessed applications competitively against factors including value to the Territory and potential to scale and attract investment, while the new Ignite program has retained the broader objective of building investment-ready Territory start-ups. Applicants should therefore clearly explain the commercial opportunity, market need, project outcomes and potential Territory benefits.
Recent Program Updates
The Ignite Program was launched in July 2026 as the next evolution of the former Business Innovation Program. The new program introduced two streams, additional founder training and pitch workshops, and a streamlined application process.
The major structural changes include:
- Stream A – Planning: $2,000 voucher plus advisory and mentoring support, with applications open year-round.
- Stream B – Creating: Up to $15,000 for minimum viable product development.
- Additional pitch and investor training opportunities.
- Four Stream B funding rounds during the 2026–27 period.
- A stated overall support opportunity of up to $17,000 across the program structure.
As at September 2026, Stream B Round 1 closes on 7 September 2026, followed by three additional scheduled rounds through June 2027.
